Northern Ireland Weather: What to Expect & When to Visit

1 August 20255 min read

What's the weather really like in Northern Ireland? Here's an honest, month-by-month guide to planning your visit around the weather.

Northern Ireland has a temperate maritime climate — mild, wet, and changeable. It rarely gets very hot or very cold, but it does rain — and planning around the weather can significantly improve your experience.

Monthly Overview

January & February The coldest months, with temperatures averaging 4–8°C. Short days (dark by 4 PM), but also the quietest time to visit. The coast can be dramatically stormy — spectacular for photography if you dress appropriately.

March & April Temperatures begin to climb (8–12°C), days lengthen rapidly, and the first daffodils and cherry blossom appear. A great time to visit — shoulder season prices, fewer tourists, but unpredictable weather.

May One of the best months to visit. Temperatures of 12–16°C, long days (still light at 9 PM), fresh green countryside, and smaller crowds. Recommended.

June The start of peak season. Temperatures 14–18°C, days very long (light until 10 PM), and the best weather statistically. Popular sites like the Giant's Causeway can be crowded — arrive early.

July & August Peak summer. Best weather, longest days, maximum activity and events. Also maximum crowds and prices. Book everything well in advance.

September Often warm (15–18°C) with beautiful golden light and fewer crowds than summer. Excellent for photography at the Giant's Causeway and Dark Hedges. Highly recommended.

October & November The Dark Hedges are spectacular in autumn colours. Temperatures drop (8–12°C) and days shorten. A moody, atmospheric time to visit.

December Short days and cold, but Belfast has excellent Christmas markets and festivities. The quietest month for tourism.

What to Pack Regardless of when you visit: - A good waterproof jacket — essential, not optional - Layers — temperatures can change dramatically through the day - Sturdy waterproof shoes or walking boots for coastal sites - Sunscreen in summer (the sun can be deceptively strong)
